What Italy Needs

How can Italy sort itself out?  It has a dodgy government which does not seem to be capable of governing – unless forced into acting by external forces.  The Prime Minister is caught up in so many legal tangles, it’s embarrassing and there do not seem to be any serious opposition parties.

What can be done?

Let’s get radical.

Install a technical government – one made up of experts and specialists who believe in Italy and who are known for their honesty and integrity.

Make, for example, Mario Draghi, the soon to be ex-Bank of Italy governor, Italy’s finance minister.

Once the technical government has been set up and is running, all of Italy current bunch of politicians from both Italy’s senate and lower house should be retired.  All of them – no exceptions – right, left, and centre.

While the technical government is going about its work and simplifying Italy’s systems; along German lines, perhaps, new potential members of parliament should be selected.

Italy has 20 regions and each has a regional capital.  Each capital should be allowed to propose candidates for a total of 20 possible MPs.

Each region should be divided up into north, south, east, and west with each section being allowed to propose 2 candidates per section. This would produce 160 potential new MPs – plus the 20 city representatives for a total of 180 potential politicians.

Each potential candidate would have to live in the area of the region he or she is to represent.

None of the candidates must be related to each other or to anyone in politics at the moment.

None should be under investigation for anything greater than the non-payment of a parking fine.

All should be made to swear allegiance to Italy’s flag – before they stand for election.  Moreover, each candidate should take a series of psychological tests to ensure they are fit for the job.  Lie detectors should be used too.

Background checks, including tax declarations, would be carried out on all candidates.  Bank accounts would be audited.

No Future in Italy for the Young

Low salaries, unclear career paths, and a distinct lack of meritocracy are aspects of Italy’s job market which have caused many young Italians to look for jobs outside of Italy. Italian brain power, which is not to be underestimated, is moving away, and may never return.
