Winter is setting in and the sky over Milan is taking on its winter appearance – grey and overcast. The fumes from the traffic were noticeable today too. We have not had any car free Sundays since Mayor Moratti took over the helm, which is a shame, although plenty of noise is being made about high PMI levels. I know that the car free days were not much more than a token and that a new car tax system based on engine output is about to be introduced – meaning that owners of big cars will have to pay more. While this is all well and good, it does not get cars off the roads, nor does it really encourage the introduction of low pollution transportation. If the current predictions are to be believed, then our planet will be in a poor state by the time my little one has grown up. The human induced negative changes are taking less then hundreds of years, whereas natural climate change usually takes place over many thousands of years.

I hate to think what will happen when all the Chinese end up with cars. Climate change will speed up alarmingly, unless clever manufacturers use China to introduce and test low/zero pollution vehicles. Nice thought.
