Microsoft’s steathy update

Last night I switched off my computer, only I would not switch off.  At the XP shutting down screen a message told me that four updates were being installed and that the system would shut itself down once the installation was complete.  I found this process a little bit worrying, as it is the first time the system has been updated in this fashion. I do not recall having seen the usual message indicating that updates were available, so I could not see what was about to be updated and select which updates I wanted to install, which was odd.  Luckily, I had read somewhere that Microsoft had released several critical updates, so at least I had an idea as to what was going on.  Lo and behold, after 5 minutes, my trusty PC shut itself down once the new stuff had been integrated into my system.

Stop reading, start speaking

Stop translating in your head and start speaking Italian for real with the only audio course that prompt you to speak.

But the story does not end there.  This evening I attempted to put my hot and bothered PC into standby, only Windows would not let me.  There was a message saying that an update to the .NET framework would not let my PC have a rest.  I found the .NET service and shut it down, after putting it into manual mode.  I know how to do this, but I wonder how many people do not.  I suspect quite a few forums have been buzzing today, with people asking what is going on, and what the solution is.

Possibly Microsoft should have told me what was about to happen.
