Lovely day and a holiday

It’s a beautiful sunny day here in Milan and this is made all the better by the fact that it is also a national holiday. Milan is unnaturally quiet for a Wednesday.

Apparently the temperature will drop dramatically in the next few days as winter arrives in its usual sudden fashion. The balmy 20 degree days will give way to cool 10 degree winter days, until winter really sets in and the thermometer will not go much above 5 degrees. Winter wardrobe time, woollen socks and heavy suits. Everyone, including me, is coming down with colds as their bodies struggle moving from superheated appartments to the cool outside.

The mountains around Milan will become snow capped and the ski slopes will start opening for business. Christmas ads are also starting to appear as the festive season draws near. I’m looking forward to Milan’s equivalent of a winter fair – more on that in another post.

The subject of bread got me thinking about this basic food and its almost fundamental role in Italian daily life.
