Abruzzo is not all that well known outside of Italy, so here is a map to help you understand just where in Italy this tragedy took place.
For those who are unsure as to where the earthquake struck region is, what follows is a Google Map centred on the Italian city of L’Aqulia.
L’Aquila Close to the Epicentre of the April 6th Earthquake
Zoom out of the map to understand where this is in Italy.
The area worse hit was within an approximately 10 kilometre (6 mile) area around L’Aquila.

We’ll be driving from Rome to Chieti next week (due east across Italy). The road (A25) will take us about 35 miles South of A’quila. Does anyone know if there are any road closings that may affect our travels?
Thank you!!
Can anyone please update with the situation in A’quila and the surrounding area? I visited here in 2008 with my family and found it to be such a beautiful place with wonderful people. We stayed at Loreto Apurtino, and travelled extensively across the area.
I hope that those who have suffered in this tradegy are finding some peace.
Hi David,
I suggest you visit http://aboutabruzzo.com/
The guy who runs it, Bodach, has a house in the region, so he knows quite a lot about the area.
From my own knowledge, I know that part of the centre of L’Aquila was recently reopened, and that rebuilding is going ahead, even if many people are still living in tent cities.
But leave a comment on Bodach’s blog.
Best regards,
Alex
Thank’s Alex,
I’ll drop Bodach a line.
No worries, David. You’re welcome.
Cheers,
Alex
