For reasons as to me unclear, many people I know here in Milan deride Turin. This just makes me want to visit Fiat city even more.
Maybe Italians think Turin is the ‘Detroit of Italy’! I don’t know. Anyway, this week, I’m posting two Images of Italy, seeing as last week I was away in the mountains creating the odd image of Italy of my own.
Back to Turin. This black and white image of a Turin backstreet by cbjphoto is charming, and makes me want to go to Turin more than ever! One of these days…
A casual walk by cbjphoto
Sometimes, black and white works very well, even in a colour world! Great job cbj!
If you would like to see more of cbjphoto’s work then go see cbjphoto on Flickr, where you will also find a few more images of Italy.
Oh, and if you have been to Turin, tell me what it’s like – but only if you are not an Italian from Milan ![]()

I do not understand the prejudice against Torino. It is a fabulous city. I’ve been there twice, once for a month-long stay. It’s got tons of museums, nearby castles, palaces, terrific restaurants and THE best food shops anywhere. Not to mention nearby vineyards and great wine. I’d gladly go back for another month or more.
Hi Linda,
Nope, I’ve never really understood what some Italians seem to have against Turin – and I’ve never been there!
If you like it, then it must be OK!
Thanks giving Turin the thumbs up! It’s also got a real river, which Milan lacks.
Best,
Alex
I am a huge fan of Torino, finding it very European, with lots of creative neighborhoods, a fabulous cafe scene, great markets, and a genteel urban feel – plus a great river promenade for walking your dog or jogging. On a clear day, you can see the Alps, and in a short time you are in the Langhe — drinking and eating, drinking and eating. Torino is competely underrated. Our guests love the city and so do we.
So you are another Turin fan! The city not the football team!
Good to hear!
Both of the comments hear are convincing me that Turin is worth a visit! Sounds like a day trip there is on the cards…possibly with my Italian other half – if I can persuade here to come with me, that is. She is not a Turin fan.
Very interesting to hear that your B&B guests love Turin too.
Thanks for sticking up for Turin!
Best,
Alex
Like the Milanese should talk! Torino is a wonderful city and unfairly maligned. The downtown has the most wonderful covered arcades that make up what is known as the Kings’s walk, as the Savoia family loved to make a” passagiata” with out having to brave the elements. You will find so many historic cafes and fabulous food displays you’ll be hard pressed to know where to start. Someone once said that Torino is the city of small details and I think that is very accurate. There are loads of decorative architecture to keep you fascinated for more than an afternoon. Don’t forget to have a Bicherin, a Grom gelato and don’t miss the apperitivio in the afternoon in your closest bar.
Another vote for Turin!
Thanks Marla!
Hello,
I certainly enjoyed Turin when I was there for several days in 2006 and again in 2007, once going from Milan to Genoa and then the opposite direction. I walked almost everywhere and the one time I did take the tram, I didn’t pay attention and got on going the wrong direction–a mistake easily corrected.
The movie museum is great fun. There is much to see in the buidings on the main square and elsewhere. Great museums, great churches, great cafes with snacks coming along with drinks. I took the train up to the church in the hills and ran into a very grand funeral and some great views after a bit of huffing and puffing up the last hill. And if you fancy hot chocolate so thick you can take a picture of it as it goes from spoon back into cup, I suggest you go to Turin. I will certainly go back if I have the chance.
Sorry this is a bit long, but I do get carried away about Italy.
Thanks for another positive thumbs up for Turin, Joan!
The movie museum sounds interesting – I did not know about that.
And thanks for getting carried away;-) No problem whatsoever!
All the best from Milan,
Alex
Keep an eye for reruns of Dopo mezzanotte – one more reason to go to Turin and visit the Museo Nazionale del Cinema

Thanks Licia!
Yet another reason to check out Turin!
Best,
Alex
