Thanks from GlobalGiving and from Blog from Italy For Helping Abruzzo

On this somewhat dull Monday here in not so sunny at the moment Milan, I’ve just received some good news by way of  an email from the GlobalGiving charity updating me on how their Abruzzo Earthquake fund raising efforts have been progressing.

Apparently, the link on Blog from Italy to GlobalGiving’s United States and United Kingdom Abruzzo earthquake appeals did help raise money for the appeal.  If you were one of the people who made a donation after reading the post about GlobalGiving’s initiatives, then many thanks to you from me, and from the people of the Abruzzo region of Italy.

GlobalGiving’s fund raising efforts are continuing and are even involving the likes of Madonna, Jennifer Anniston and Eva Longoria.

Details follow on how much has been raised to date, how the money is being used and on how the stars mentioned above are helping out.  You will also find out how you too can make a contribution, if you so wish, if you keep reading.

So far, I’m pleased to be able to report that GlobalGiving‘s Abruzzo appeal has raised £654 from UK residents, and US residents have donated nearly $27,ooo.  In addition, some £16,000 has been raised via the UK as a result of a tie up between GlobalGiving and Ebay.co.uk.

Us foreigners may not always understand Italy, but we are able to appreciate when it needs a hand.  One hopes Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi and other Italian politicians appreciate this, and how the internet has helped Italy too.

Ferragamo Handbags and Ebay USA

The fund raising efforts on behalf of the people of Abruzzo are still continuing and American readers might like to know that handbag designer Ferragamo has persuaded stars such Madonna, Jennifer Anniston, Eva Longoria, Demi Moore, Lucy Liu and Gwyneth Paltrow, plus a few other well known celebrities to auction off their Ferragamo handbags on Ebay.

Stop reading, start speaking

Stop translating in your head and start speaking Italian for real with the only audio course that prompt you to speak.

100% of the proceeds of the Ebay auctions will be donated to GlobalGiving’s Abruzzo relief fund. The Ebay Ferragamo handbag action is still in progress, there are 4 to 5 days to go, so if you are a handbag collector who likes the idea of possessing a celebrity owned Ferragamo handbag, you can have a go at bidding for these collectors pieces.  Of course, those who do manage to grab a celeb bag will also be helping the people of earthquake hit region of Italy to rebuild their lives.

Assistance from outside of Italy is likely to be both well received and put to good use, and knowing how slowly Italy can move, such help is likely to do some real good pretty quickly.

How the Funds Raised are Being Used

The money raised through GlobalGiving UK will be passed onto the Slow Food International who will provide aid within the local area. Slow Food International have posted a project update on GlobalGiving’s site: Appeal for Victims of Abruzzo Earthquake- GlobalGiving UK

The US GlobalGiving project is run by UNICO and Slow Food and they have posted a project update at: Updates from the Field – Italy Earthquake Relief and Recovery Fund – GlobalGiving USA

Once again, thanks for your generosity.

Tender Italy

This post is not going to a declaration of my undying love for Italy. No, instead it’s going to be about a problem situation which crops up all too regularly in the news here – that of public tender related corruption and fraud.
