The story that I got when I arrived is as follows:

Once upon a time in Ivrea, an EVIL prince took over power. His first edict was that (since he had the power to do so) he had the right to “sleep with” every “bride to be” in the township. This went on for many years until a rebellious bride said that she would not submit to this edict and backed by the township they threw sticks and stones at the evil prince and his palace guard and took over the government.

To commemorate this great event the township (at a festival each year) ,instead of sticks and stones, throw blood oranges at carriages driving through town with men dressed up as the palace guards who get hit by these oranges and through them back. I t is a great fun event lasting hours upon hours and at the finish the town is knee deep in orange rinds and a lot of drunk happy people. I takes place right after Lent. I loved it!!!!!!!
